Sloppy Joe Sandwich

Quick Bite
A New Jersey Sloppy Joe is not ground beef in tomato sauce, it is a triple-decker deli sandwich with cold cuts, Swiss cheese, coleslaw, and Russian dressing on rye. It is tidy compared to the name, but still beautifully overbuilt.
History
The New Jersey Sloppy Joe is closely tied to South Orange and Town Hall Deli. According to the deli’s origin story, the sandwich was created after a local politician returned from Cuba, where he had visited a bar called Sloppy Joe’s and wanted a sandwich inspired by that trip.
This version has nothing to do with the loose-meat Sloppy Joe found in school cafeterias. Instead, it is a cold deli sandwich: thin rye bread, one or more meats, Swiss cheese, creamy coleslaw, and Russian dressing, stacked in layers and cut into neat rectangles.
Town Hall Deli became the most famous home of the sandwich, and nearby delis in northern New Jersey developed their own loyal versions. Millburn Deli is another major name, serving New Jersey Sloppy Joes with meat, Swiss, slaw, and house Russian on triple-decker rye.
The sandwich works because it balances richness, tang, crunch, and softness. It is deli food with a little elegance — the kind of sandwich that somehow feels appropriate for both lunch meetings and picnic trays.
