Quick Bite
A Seattle Dog is a hot dog or sausage topped with cream cheese and grilled onions, usually served from a street cart after a game, concert, or late night out. It is smoky, creamy, oniony, and much better than the phrase “cream cheese hot dog” has any right to be.
History
The Seattle Dog is one of the city’s great street foods. Its roots are usually traced to Pioneer Square and the late 1980s, when bagel-dog vendor Hadley Long began selling hot dogs or sausages with cream cheese in a bialy-style roll near Seattle’s nightlife scene.
From there, the idea spread through street carts outside bars, music venues, stadiums, and late-night gathering spots. The bialy roll mostly gave way to more typical hot dog buns or hoagie-style rolls, but the cream cheese stayed because Seattle had apparently found its hot dog identity and was not giving it back.
Grilled onions are the other essential topping. They bring sweetness, softness, and just enough savory balance to make the cream cheese feel less like a prank and more like a plan. Jalapeños, sauerkraut, Sriracha, mustard, barbecue sauce, and cabbage may also join in, depending on the cart.
The Seattle Dog is best understood as late-night food. It smells like onions on a flat-top, comes wrapped in foil or paper, and tastes especially good when eaten on a sidewalk while pretending you did not just say, “Wait, cream cheese?”
