Reindeer Dog
Quick Bite
An Alaskan specialty hot dog made with sausage that contains reindeer (caribou) meat, often blended with pork or beef for flavor and texture.
History
The reindeer dog has its roots in Alaskan street food culture, emerging in the late 20th century as a hearty local twist on the classic hot dog. Reindeer (domesticated caribou) have long been part of Alaska’s food traditions, especially among Indigenous and northern communities, valued for their lean, flavorful meat.
In the 1980s and 1990s, Anchorage food vendors began serving reindeer sausage in hot dog buns as a quick, satisfying snack for locals and tourists. The addition of grilled onions sautéed in Coca-Cola and classic condiments helped it stand out from typical hot dogs.
Over time, the reindeer dog became an iconic Alaskan street food, symbolizing the state’s blend of rugged wilderness and urban charm. Today, it’s a must-try treat for anyone visiting Anchorage, celebrated for its rich flavor and uniquely Alaskan flair.
