Quick Bite

A Puka Dog is a Hawaiian-style hot dog tucked into a hollowed-out sweet bread bun and dressed with tropical relishes and garlic-lemon sauce. It is part hot dog, part island snack, and part delicious vacation stunt.

History

Puka Dog is a modern Hawaii invention from Kauai. The original Puka Dog opened in Kekaha in 2000 and later became strongly associated with Poipu.

“Puka” means hole, which describes the bun. Instead of splitting a bun lengthwise, the bread is pierced and toasted from the inside, then filled with a sausage or hot dog.

The toppings make it Hawaiian in personality. Tropical relishes like mango, pineapple, coconut, or starfruit meet a savory garlic-lemon sauce and mustard. The result is sweet, tangy, garlicky, and very fun.

Puka Dog became famous because it took something ordinary and made it feel like Kauai. It is not an ancient dish, but it is definitely a memorable Hawaii food experience.

Fun Facts

  • The bun is toasted from the inside.
  • “Puka” means hole.
  • The tropical relishes are half the point, so do not treat them like optional decoration.
