Irish Potato Candy
Quick Bite
Irish potato candy is a Philadelphia-area St. Patrick’s Day treat made from coconut cream rolled in cinnamon so it looks like a tiny potato. It contains no potato, which is exactly the kind of trick candy should be allowed to pull.
History
Irish potato candy is a Philadelphia-area confection most closely associated with St. Patrick’s Day. Despite the name, it is not Irish in the old-country sense and it does not contain potato. It is a Philly candy-shop tradition with a wink.
The candy is usually made from a sweet coconut cream center, shaped into small potato-like ovals, then rolled in cinnamon. Some versions include cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, vanilla, and shredded coconut. A few are decorated with pine nuts to look like potato eyes.
The treat became popular through Philadelphia-area candy makers and bakeries, especially during the weeks leading up to St. Patrick’s Day. Shane Confectionery notes that the Shane family has been making these little “spuds” for over a century, and Oh Ryan’s describes its original Irish potatoes as a seasonal coconut cream candy rolled in cinnamon.
Irish potato candy is now one of those hyper-regional sweets that people either grew up with or discover with confusion. It is sweet, cinnamon-dusted, coconut-heavy, and very good at looking like something it is not.
