Quick Bite
A loaded Mexican-American comfort food that originated in Southern California. They’re essentially French fries topped with seasoned grilled steak and other classic toppings, making them a hearty, indulgent dish.
History
Carne asada fries originated in Southern California, most likely in the 1990s, as a fusion of classic American French fries with Mexican carne asada tacos. The dish is often credited to San Diego-area taquerias, where inventive cooks began topping fries with grilled, marinated beef, cheese, guacamole, and sour cream, essentially turning a taco into a hearty, shareable plate.
The combination quickly caught on in Mexican-American communities, particularly in California and the Southwest, and spread to other states like Arizona and Texas. Carne asada fries became a late-night, comfort-food favorite, popular at casual eateries, sports bars, and fast-casual Mexican restaurants.
Unlike traditional fries or tacos, the dish is loaded, messy, and indulgent, representing a creative twist on both American and Mexican culinary traditions.
